As part of my applied business GCSE, I have been asked to compare two different companies. The two companies I am going to compare are Nike and McDonald’s. Nike is an LTD, while McDonald’s is a franchise. At the end of this course I aim to get a better understanding of how businesses run.  The business location (McDonalds)  Most of McDonald’s earliest restaurants were opened in the UK during the 1970s, many customers were willing to travel miles to visit them. This specific McDoands is located in archway (N19) McDonald’s believe that their customer convience & research are the things that drive force behind McDonald’s restaurants and locations. Such development has led to new McDonald’s in sites as varied as cross-channel ferries, a bowling alley and London’s former County Hall. The Company is committed to responsible growth, and works closely with local planning officers and community groups when developing a new restaurant. When McDonalds decide to open a new restaurant, it is considered as a long-term proposition. For McDonalds, local knowledge is a key factor to choosing new locations. McDonald’s relies on discussions with local managers who are involved at the grass roots level with their local communities.  Key customers & competitors. (McDonalds)  McDonald’s are one of the leading providers of quick service food globally. In the UK, the company has 1,250 restaurants – around 500 of which are franchised operations. Seen as how McDonalds are a very big and successful franchise, they are bound to have competitors such as:McDonald’s are one of the only franchises to have a goal of no more than two complaints per restaurant per month. Using Business Objects to spot problems early, such as staffing levels, some 500 stores have achieved zero complaints for more than two months. In McDonalds, customer service is improved by information from the three â€Å"Mystery Shopper† visits to each restaurant monthly. This information includes, amongst other criteria, whether or not there was a friendly greeting, whether the server was wearing a name badge, as well as the overall cleanliness of the restaurant.  Some of McDonald’s external influences may affect the way that the business is managed and run. For example, if there were complaints being made about the level of pay for its workers then McDonald’s might have to respond to this. Even though it could be argued that the workers demands are not an external influence the company would still face pressure to make judgments about the nature of its decision-making.  The business location (Nike) Nike are known worldwide and have many stores throughout different countries, these include of:  Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russian federation, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UK and Ireland.  In Nike’s case, it is very important that all of their locations suit to their liking because Nike aims to get out of their store locations including, profit and popularity. I walked into my Advanced Composition class on the first day of school and was greeted by my peppy, upbeat teacher, Ms. Jorgensen. She encouraged me to do this by using different writing techniques. Then, throughout first semester, my writing became interesting and bold†¦instead of dry and boring. Overall Ms. J, has been my favorite teacher in my high school career. She has always been there to not only help me, but to also help other kids that are struggling, whether she likes them or not. She never does your work for you, but she points you in the right direction. I also had Ms. J for College Strategies. In this class, she helped each student learn what they needed to have a successful college career. We learned about study skills, nutrition, and self-advocacy, sleep, and even how to pick our classes and professors. Throughout the class, she looked to us for ideas. She really wanted us to be learning about what we wanted to know. She helped us write our college essays (which helped me get into my first-choice school). And she even taught us relaxation skills. I use these skills before basketball games—and even before big tests. Ms. J was a person I could relate to—and a person I admired. She rarely wears a frown on her face and her smile rubs off on all her students. This is why I appreciate having Ms. Jorgensen as a teacher so much.

Too much lecture and no exercise can actually make the brain less productive. This is the reason why educational institutions are investing well for the development of athletic departments that are expected to help their students become better academic performers. Also , with having an athletic department as part of their school, it has been made aware that this has increased competency in handling the educational needs of their students. This is the reason why I think that the establishment of an athletic department would best support the needs and the goals of this school in both the mental and the physical abilities of the students that the school is preparing themselves to cater to. The effects of osmosis Essay Introduction: Osmosis is a movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane. This may only happen when there is a difference in concentration between the two sides of the membrane. The water moves from low concentrations to high concentrations. That is because the low concentrated area tries to dilute the opposite via osmosis. The effects osmosis has on a cell are either that it becomes turgid and hard as water enters the cell or it becomes dehydrated (this is called plasmolysing in plant cells) as water leaves the cell and the solution enters. There is a change of mass, volume, texture and length. Aim: The aim is to investigate the effects of varying concentrations of a salt solution on the amount of osmotic activity between the solution and a potato of a given size. Osmosis: Process of Osmosis Osmosis is the process of the flow of one constituent of a solution (in this case salt) through a membrane while the other constituents are blocked and unable to pass through the membrane. Experimentation is necessary to determine which membranes permit selective flow, or osmosis, because not all membranes act in this way. Many membranes allow all or none of the constituents of a solution to pass through; only a few allow a selective flow. That is why I have chosen potatoes as my semi-permeable membrane. In osmosis, a solvent (often water) moves from a region of low concentration to a region of high concentration through a semi-permeable membrane. Here,  water molecules diffuse into the concentrated salt solution because the water molecules are small enough to move through the semi permeable membrane. The larger salt molecules are unable to move through the membrane into the water solution because the membrane acts as a net. Osmosis will stop when the two solutions reach equal concentrations on either side of the membrane. Hypothesis: The hypothesis is that as the solvent, the water enters the potato cell to dilute the concentrated salt solution in side the cells. As the salt solution gets weaker more water will enter the cell. This is because more water is needed to dilute the stronger salt solution concentration in the potato cells. The water will try to flow in and out of the potato continuously until it will reach an isotonic equilibrium. The potato cells become turgid and hydrated. However the potato is a plant therefore it has a cell wall that means that at some point the cell wall will stop letting in water or slow it?s flow down. If the plant cells did not have a rigid cell wall they would burst, like in animal cells which have soft cell walls. In this particular investigation I intend to prove that the lower the concentration of the salt solution in the petri dish, the greater the mass of the potato will be. This is because the water molecules pass from a high concentration, i.e. in the water itself, to a low concentration, i.e. in the potato chip. Therefore, the 4 cm core bored potato ?chips? in higher water concentrations will have a larger mass than in higher salt concentrations. If the concentrated salt solution is stronger than the isotonic solution then the cell will lose water. Water will leave the cell and dilute the strong salt solution outside the cell. It will make the concentration gradient equalize. As the strength of the concentrated solution increases the more water will leave the cell. The potatoes cell wall will only shrink because it is only the cell wall that will dehydrate or plasmolyse, but only up to a certain extent because it is only the vacuole that will seriously shrink. The plasmolysed plant cell can be seen under a microscope. My prediction for this particular investigation is at about 0.4 / 0.6 [molar] concentration the salt solution there will be an increase in both mass and length of the potato. The weaker the salt solution the further the solution the quicker will cause decrease in mass and length in the potato. To examine and create an appropriate range of results. For this experiment six petri dishes were used each with five 4 cm core-bored pieces of potato. As evidence of osmosis occurring I used the difference of weight before (after being blotted for six minutes) and after being in the salt solution. The control is five core-bored potatoes in a distilled water solution. Here nothing anomalous should occur. To make the results valuable the experiment is replicated five times in each petri dish. Any anomalous results in the potatoes it will be noticed and recorded To ensure reliability of results, the whole experiment will be replicated to increase the accuracy of the results. Further information on potato plant cells: Plant cells always have a strong cell wall surrounding them. When they take up water by osmosis they start to swell, but the cell wall prevents them from bursting, unlike animal cells ie. cheek cells, which explode if they take up to much water. Plant cells become turgid when they are put in dilute solutions. Turgid means swollen, stiff and hard. The pressure inside the cell rises and eventually the internal pressure of the cell is so high that no more water can enter the cell. This liquid or hydrostatic pressure works against osmosis. Turgidity is very important to plants because this is what makes the green parts of the plant stand up into the sunlight. When plant cells are placed in concentrated salt solutions they lose water by osmosis and they become flaccid. This is the exact opposite of turgid. He also justifies his actions according to the philosophy of the new hedonism. At the end of the novel, he chooses to destroy the painting as a way to confess. All these behavior depicts a spirit which aims to avoid all the commitments and condemnation. Professor John Sutherland once said in his lecture that this writing would have secured Wilde only a minor place in literature, but his status is elevated by his notoriety. I am not totally on board with this statement. Wilde may not be a very successful novelist but he is a successful living human being pursuing what he really wants for all his life. He thinks that it was the artists duty to rebel against precisely sacred orthodoxies. He and his novel are of total success in this sense as a perfect reflection of art and beauty.

When the reader first encounters Ophelia within Hamlet, she is speaking with Laertes, her brother, and Polonius, her father. From these interactions, Ophelia appears to be the true embodiment of what a woman was expected to be. She listens respectfully to her brother and father, speaking only twenty-one lines as opposed to their combined one hundred and twenty. She dutifully responds to their advice: â€Å"I shall the effect of this good lesson keep† (1.3 l.49) and â€Å"I shall obey, my lord† (1.4 l. 145). Yet aside from this expected and somewhat boring picture, the reader learns little of Ophelia. In response to the play’s call to â€Å"Stand and unfold yourself† (1.1 l.2), Ophelia appears to have nothing to say.
